Jonathan & Jenifer Allen - June 23, 2007

It's 1900 and the Hanes Family is in Texarkana

It's 1900 and the Hanes family is in Texarkana. According to the census for that year the family is composed of:

Dan who is 40
Martha is also listed as 40 which isn't correct.
Almer is 19
Sanford is 19 and I don't think this is correct either.
Willie B is 14.
Tom is 6 and according to the census he was born in Texas.
Videlia is 5
Not named Hanes is 2
Arcie is 1

There is no 1890 census, the records were destroyed in a fire. So we don't know if the family was in Texarkana by 1890, although I think they came to Texas after 1890.

Let's Raffle a Quilt!!!

Hello Everybody,
I am looking forward to seeing our family in Wisconsin!!! We will have a great time together. We in Texas are really working on our activities. Are the rest of you doing the same?
I am attaching a picture of the quilt we will be raffling off during the 4 days there in Wisconsin. The quilt is being donated by Elphaney Haynes Dewberry. You may buy as many raffle tickets as you like. The final raffle ticket will be sold on Thursday at the beginning of the program. You can even sell a ticket to a friend that you let see it on the web site.

Someone can go home with this gorgeous quilt. It could be you.

We will use the money to offset the cost of a Haynes Family Booklet. This will be put together after the reunion is over. Ronnie Allen will be the prime constructor of this booklet. It will be mailed out to everyone after completion. It may take a while and I am sure Ronnie will appreciate help in the process. Talk to him before, during &/or after the reunion on how you can be part of the process of compiling the magnificent Haynes Family Booklet!!!

Your Niece, Cousin or Sister,

Deborah Haynes

Almer Haynes April 2, 1881- April 16, 1965

"We smile, but we smile through our weeping,
We sing but the sigh will find echo
In every refrain we employ
We cherish the sweetest of friendships
To find death steps in between;
But courage, dear heart, not forever
Will blossoms all fade by thy side;
Not here, but just over yonder
Life's strange disappointments will cause."
Robert Hare

1880- Where are the Wards and Bohannons.

It's 1880 and the Wards are in Bowie County, Texas. They are a family of three:

Moses is about 35
Puss (Amanda) is about 26. According to my mother, Puss was the nickname used by grandpa Ward for his wife. Apparently, he gave that name to the census takers.
Charles is about a year old. Moses is a farmer, while Amanda is a housekeeper.
The 1880 census also tells us that Moses' mother was born in Tennessee. There is no birthplace for his father. We already know that Amanda's parents were from Virginia.

There is no census record of Benj and Kitty Bohannon. I believe they died between 1870 and 1880. Amanda's brother Thomas is married to Mary and they have two children. Benjamin is one and Andrew is just two months old.
Thomas is also a farmer while Mary keeps the house.

Obituary for Martha Haynes - April 20, 1961

Mrs. Martha Haynes was born more than 100 years ago in Arcadia, Louisiana. She was reared by an Uncle James Lewis.

She was married at an early age to T. Johnson and to this union was born one child, Elton Johnson. After the death of Mr. Johnson, she married Dan Haynes. To this union nine children were born.

She became a member of the Harmony Baptist Church in Arcadia and after moving to Nash, Texas about 1895, she united with the Evergreen Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. G. H. Gulatte and remained an active member as long as her health permitted.

She leaves to mourn her loss two daughters, Mrs Videlia Bursey of Texarkana, Texas and Mrs. Obeda Muckleroy of Los Angeles, California; three sons, Almer Haynes of Texarkana, Texas, Sanford Haynes of Riverside, California, and Von D. Haynes of Los Angeles, California: 36 grandchildren, 72 great grandchildren, and 12 great great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.

Why do we morn departed friends or shake at deaths alarm?
Tis but the voice that sends to call them to his arms.
This is just another soldier gone to get a reward,
She fought the fight, she kept the faith, and now she has gone to God.
